What is Service Day? On September 21st our students will be working on community service projects with social innovators in our community. Students choose a workshop led by social innovation experts and teachers, where they will be working on a service project for the day. At the end of the day we will gather together in a Town Hall featuring guests from BRAC Social Innovation Lab and share what we experienced.
1. Maker Space Upcycle trash to create cool stuff. Find new uses for discarded tires, build a city out of cardboard or repaint old cans to make them into pen holders. Create playthings for younger kids by using your imagination and giving old materials a new life.
2. Disaster Preparedness and First-Aid Learn first responder training and disaster readiness. Participants will teach primary school students what to do in an emergency. Students interested in fire prevention and building a caring community will have fun learning from our mentors at Criticalink.
3. Gender Equality- Destigmatise Menstruation Create a campaign to take action, and launch it with Year 5 students. Students who want to destigmatise menstruation in our local and greater community would enjoy this workshop, partnered with Wreetu.
4. Gender Equality- Empower women (grades 9-12) Learn self-defense skills and target issues that prevent gender equality and create an engaging performance piece that addresses a social issue related to gender inequality. Drama lovers who are passionate about gender inequality should consider signing up. This workshop is led by the founders of FEM, Female Empowerment Movement.
5. Zero food waste Over one third of all food produced ends up in the bin! Create a campaign using photos and persuasive language to target hunger by decreasing our school's food waste. Digital tools such as stop-motion animation will be a fun way to start a zero food waste movement.
6. Dance Communication Blue Poppers Using hip-hop, dancers will create a performance that raises awareness about a social issue. Blue Poppers will help teach new moves and create choreography.
7. Mural Students will collaborate on a mural to promote peace in our community.
8. Climate Action- Photoblogging Collaborate on a global photoblog where youth examine and share the local impacts of climate change in their community. International Climate Change and Action will connect us to this global project.
9. Solmaid Students will run a day long camp for Sol Maid school, what activities do you enjoy? Create an exciting learning experience where you share your passions with young students from Sol Maid school.
10. Amarachi Students will run a day long leadership/creativity/sports workshop for these students
11. Rise and Shine Students will develop a creativity camp for Rise and Shine and create something amazing together.
12. Language for Learning Students will plan a day long Language camp for students. Find exciting ways to teach language through role-play, games and technology.
13. Tech Crew Tech crew members will work with primary students to help them produce a show or create a video.
14. Amplify your project: Digital Tools Project Be Learn how to use digital tools to amplify your team's vision and projects. ProjectBe's founder and team members will help students capture and share their team's story through video.
15. Solve the Global Goals- YY Goshti Students will collaborate and submit a solution to an IDEO global challenge IDEO Open Challenge facilitated by YYGoshti, a organisation dedicated building youth capacity for social innovation.
16. Student Proposal New project proposal for a service project that can be completed in 4.5 hours.
